Through the seasons

Things to do in the Aisne with kids? Tata has enough to fill sixteen days of holiday, without emptying your wallet!

The Christmas holidays start after school on Saturday 19 December 2026; classes resume on Monday 4 January 2027. Ideas include: €4 to €5 workshops in the Saint-Quentin museums, a castle and the Cité free for under-18s, and an opera sung in French in Villers-Cotterêts. Tata Nadège gives you her ideas area by area, with prices, ages and the list of doors that stay shut between the 24th and 1 January.

In short: the 2026 French school Christmas holidays (zone B) run from Saturday 19 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027, when school starts again. In Saint-Quentin, the museums run children's workshops and tours at €4 to €5 from 19 to 30 December, and the Christmas village is free. Coucy castle and the Cité internationale de la langue française are free for under-18s, but closed on 25 December and 1 January. The Caverne du Dragon closes on 24, 25 and 31 December.

Two weeks. Yes, you read that right: two weeks of holiday, from Saturday 19 December 2026 until school restarts on Monday 4 January 2027. The school bag will barely have hit the hallway floor before the little question lands: "What are we doing?" And you will look at me as if I had the answer.

Well, as it happens, I do.

Breathe. Tata has answers that will not empty your wallet, and not a single screen switched on, which will make a nice change. Workshops at €4 to €5 in the Saint-Quentin museums, two major sites free for under-18s, an opera sung in French in Villers-Cotterêts.

I followed the official programmes area by area, from the north of the department to the south. I also flag the closed doors, to spare you the outing that ends in front of a locked gate with disappointed children in the back seat. Everything below is dated and sourced; when I do not know, I say so.

The 2026 Christmas holiday dates

The 2026 Christmas holidays start on Saturday 19 December 2026 after school and end on the morning of Monday 4 January 2027, when classes resume. The dates are the same across metropolitan France; the Aisne belongs to the Amiens school district, in zone B. That makes two full weekends and two full weeks, enough to wear out even the most tireless grandparents. I know what I am talking about. Well, I imagine.

One detail everybody forgets, except Tata: many French museums close on Mondays. 21 and 28 December are Mondays, and I point it out every time it matters.

Christmas holiday special 2026: my ideas, area by area

Check the language of each workshop with its organiser. Unless stated otherwise, you book with the organiser shown. We start in the north, and we do not dawdle.

Saint-Quentin: the museums are packed with ideas

Saint-Quentin is where it all happens, and I am not saying that because I have a soft spot for the Christmas village: the programme is the richest here, between the Antoine Lécuyer fine arts museum and the butterfly museum. Parent and child yoga, watercolour, storytelling, festive caterpillars: there is something for restless hands and for daydreamers alike. My advice: book early, some workshops only have a handful of places.

Beyond the workshops, the station gets into the Christmas spirit too: a Christmas tea at the buffet on the station forecourt on Saturday 19, Wednesday 23 and Saturday 26 December at 16:00, and a breakfast on Wednesday 30 December at 10:30, at €7, €3.50 or free depending on age, booked through the tourist office. And the Christmas village, on rue Saint-André, the basilica forecourt and square Winston Churchill, has been open from 14:30 since 27 November, with an ice rink, sledges and Father Christmas's house, free of charge according to the city agenda.

Venue pages: Antoine Lécuyer museum, butterfly museum, Saint-Quentin basilica.

Laonnois and Chaunois: La Fère and Coucy

Let us leave Saint-Quentin and head south. Seat belts on, in the back too.

In La Fère, the Jeanne d'Aboville museum holds "Noël au musée" (Christmas at the museum) on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 December 2026, from 15:00 to 16:00: a playful tour, then a craft workshop and an afternoon snack. It is for ages 6 and up, €4 per adult, booking only on 03 23 56 71 91 or at musee-daboville@ville-lafere.fr. The museum, at 5 rue du Général de Gaulle, is not accessible to people with reduced mobility.

Now picture the ruins of a medieval castle under a December sky. In Coucy-le-Château, the castle is open every day during the holidays, from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 17:30, with last entry 45 minutes before closing. It is closed on 25 December and 1 January. Admission is €7 and free for under-18s; it is even free for everyone on Sunday 3 January 2027, the first Sunday of the month. And mind you, bring warm clothes: the ruins are not heated, and the lunch break falls exactly when the children get hungry. See also my page on Coucy castle.

Soissonnais and Villers-Cotterêts: the Cité

The Cité internationale de la langue française, in Villers-Cotterêts, is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:30, with last entry one hour before. It is closed on Mondays, 25 December and 1 January, and closes at 17:30 on 24 and 31 December (last entry 16:30). A ticket costs €9 and is free for under-18s; admission is free for everyone on Sunday 3 January 2027. Allow about two hours.

And here is what makes Tata smile, and she is hard to please: during the holidays, the Cité stages "La Flûte enchantée" (The Magic Flute), after Mozart, sung in French, on Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 December 2026 at 17:00, in a production by Renaud Boutin (Labopéra Oise). It is for ages 7 and up, 2 h 10 including the interval, at €10 full price and €5 reduced (notably for under-26s). On Wednesday 30 December, from 10:30 to 12:30, an introduction to opera singing helps you prepare a few passages to sing from the audience during the performance: from age 7, €9 for adults (permanent exhibition included), free for under-18s. I am not promising your teenager will sing in tune, but they will have sung at the opera.

Venue pages: Cité internationale de la langue française, Villers-Cotterêts château park. In Soissons, the town announces its Christmas market from 27 November to 27 December 2026 and a ride park for children aged 2 to 10, on place Fernand Marquigny, until 1 January 2027.

South Aisne: Château-Thierry

The Château-Thierry town centre Christmas market runs from 3 to 24 December 2026, on place du Beau Richard, according to the town agenda. For the holidays, the Adothèque youth space offers "Le cadeau surprise" (the surprise present) on Saturday 19 December, for ages 11 to 17, reserved for holders of the teen card, with limited places: sign up at the Espace Famille on 03 23 84 86 86. Venue page: Château-Thierry medieval castle.

Thiérache: the Familistère in Guise

The Familistère in Guise is open from 10:00 to 17:30 until 31 December, closed on Mondays, with last entry one hour before closing. Allow about three hours. Guided tours "Les comités de visite" leave every day at 11:30 and 15:00, and a children's tour, "Si le Familistère m'était conté" (once upon a time at the Familistère), lasts 60 minutes (ask on site for times). A reduced rate applies from 6 to 18; I did not find the detailed amounts on the opening hours page. Careful: the winter season resumes on 20 January, so the site is closed from 1 to 19 January 2027. Venue page: Familistère de Guise.

Chemin des Dames: the Caverne du Dragon

The Caverne du Dragon is a First World War memorial site: I suggest you talk about it with your children before you go. From 16 November to 30 December 2026, it opens from 10:00 to 17:00, except Mondays, and it closes exceptionally on 24 and 25 December, then on 31 December for the annual closure. The cave can only be visited with a guide (1 h 15, about 12 °C underground): €10 full price, €6 or €2 reduced. The visitor centre is free and open access.

For ages 6 to 11, the "Jeune Public" (young audience) tour is a family visit on Wednesdays at 11:00: the children have one hour to find objects hidden in the cave. Prices: €9 from 7 to 18, €6 per accompanying adult, free up to age 6. During the holidays, that means Wednesdays 23 and 30 December; I advise you to check on the ticketing site that it is indeed scheduled on those days. Venue page: Caverne du Dragon.

The 24th, 25th, 31st and 1st: who is open?

The question that ruins tempers. You promised an outing, everyone is in the car, and the door is shut. The children will remember it for a long time. Here is what the official sites say.

Free outings

On the budget side, Tata has naturally thought of your wallet. Here is what costs nothing:

  • Under-18s: free admission to Coucy castle and the Cité internationale de la langue française, all year round.
  • Everyone, on Sunday 3 January 2027: free admission to Coucy castle and the Cité (and already on Sunday 6 December 2026).
  • Saint-Quentin: the Christmas village, its ice rink, sledges and Father Christmas's house, until 27 December; the "Enfances" (childhoods) exhibition on the railings of the town hall; "Livres mystères" (mystery books) at the Guy de Maupassant media library on Saturday 19 December, from 14:00 to 17:00; the waterbird count at Parc d'Isle on Sunday 20 December at 10:00, free on booking on 03 23 05 06 50.
  • Chemin des Dames: the Caverne du Dragon visitor centre, open access.
  • Villers-Cotterêts: the 30 December introduction to opera singing, free for under-18s.

December weekends, before the holidays

The children are already bouncing off the walls in December? How surprising. To keep them going until 19 December, here are the dated events I found.

  • Wednesday 2 December, Villers-Cotterêts: festive workshops at the Alexandre Dumas museum, a Christmas bauble for ages 6 to 10 from 10:30 to 11:45 (€3.65), a dried flower wreath from age 12 from 14:30 to 16:00 (€6.10 for over-18s, €3.65 for under-18s). Booking on 03 23 96 23 30.
  • Wednesday 2 December, Château-Thierry: "Monstre moche" (ugly monster) at La Biscuiterie at 14:00, from age 3.
  • Saturday 12 December, Tergnier: Christmas decoration workshops at the media library, place Lionel Lefèvre, for families with children aged 3 to 6 from 09:30 to 11:30, and for everyone from age 7 from 14:00 to 16:00. Free, booking on 03 23 37 25 26.
  • Sunday 13 December, Château-Thierry: "Alice et Charly à la recherche du Père Noël" (Alice and Charly look for Father Christmas) at 16:00 at the Palais des Rencontres. On 12 and 13 December, the charities' Christmas market is held at the Palais des Sports.
  • Wednesday 16 December, Saint-Quentin: "Mon premier portrait aux couleurs de Noël" (my first Christmas portrait) at the Antoine Lécuyer museum from 10:00 to 11:00, for ages 3 to 6 with an adult (€5, tourist office); the Christmas story workshop at the Guy de Maupassant media library at 10:30, from age 5, free on booking on 03 23 64 61 50.
  • Friday 18 December, Gauchy: the show "CUBE" at 19:30, rue Gabriel Péri, from age 5, €5 per adult and €3.50 per child, as part of the Noël au spectacle festival.

The other events of the moment are in this weekend in the Aisne.

All year round: the safe bets

And after 4 January? The holidays close, but a few ideas work in any season. I send you to their venue pages, which give up-to-date opening hours, rather than copying winter hours here that I have not checked again.

All visit ideas are in the Things to do and see section.

My checklist so you miss nothing

  • On Mondays 21 and 28 December, the Cité, the Familistère and the Caverne du Dragon are closed: keep those days for workshops and Coucy.
  • Nearly all the Saint-Quentin museum workshops require booking, often compulsory.
  • La Fère: booking only, and no access for people with reduced mobility.
  • Caverne du Dragon: 12 °C underground, a jumper for every child.
  • On 3 January 2027, Coucy and the Cité are free for everyone: it is the last Sunday of the holidays, so expect crowds.

The bill, no guesswork

An example for a family of two adults and two children aged 8 and 12, at the prices published on 2 November 2026:

  • Coucy castle: €14 (€7 per adult, children free).
  • Cité internationale de la langue française: €18 (€9 per adult, children free).
  • "La Flûte enchantée" at the Cité: €30 (two full-price seats at €10, two seats at the €5 under-26 reduced rate).
  • One €5 workshop at the Antoine Lécuyer museum: €5 per child signed up.
  • "Jeune Public" tour of the Caverne du Dragon (ages 6 to 11): €21 for the 8-year-old and both parents (€9 plus 2 times €6).

For everything else, the prices are in the tables above. I have not costed the hot chocolate. That depends on the weather, and on how weak you are in front of a child with cold hands.

With all that, your two weeks have plenty to fill them: a workshop here, a castle there, and a free Sunday 3 January to end on a high. Now you book those workshops, before the places are gone. I will not say it again. Actually, I will: book. And here are the questions I get asked most.

The questions I already get

When are the 2026 Christmas holidays in the Aisne?

From Saturday 19 December 2026, after school, to Monday 4 January 2027, when school restarts. The dates are the same across metropolitan France, and the Aisne belongs to the Amiens school district, in zone B.

What can you do with children in the Aisne when it rains?

The Saint-Quentin museum workshops, at €4 to €5 from 19 to 30 December 2026, the Cité internationale de la langue française in Villers-Cotterêts, free for under-18s, or the Familistère in Guise, open until 31 December except Mondays.

Which places are free for children?

Coucy castle and the Cité internationale de la langue française are free for under-18s. In Saint-Quentin, the Christmas village, its ice rink and Father Christmas's house are free of charge according to the city agenda.

What is open on 25 December in the Aisne?

None of the sites I checked: the Cité, Coucy castle, the Caverne du Dragon and the Saint-Quentin museums are closed on 25 December. For the Saint-Quentin Christmas village and the Familistère, check their websites before setting off.

Is the Caverne du Dragon suitable for children?

A "Jeune Public" tour is offered for ages 6 to 11, on Wednesdays at 11:00, as a family. It is a First World War memorial site, at 12 °C underground: talk about it with your children beforehand, and wrap them up well. The site closes on 24, 25 and 31 December 2026.

Do you need to book the Christmas workshops?

Yes, nearly always. In Saint-Quentin, booking goes through the tourist office (03 23 67 05 00) or the Espace Saint-Jacques box office (03 23 62 36 77). In La Fère, it is booking only on 03 23 56 71 91.

Are the workshops in French?

The Cité's Magic Flute is sung in French. For workshops and tours, check the language with each organiser before booking.
