About this place
A former quarry turned underground barracks during the First World War, the Dragon’s Cave sheltered French and German soldiers. The underground visit is guided only; the free visitor centre also presents archives and exhibits. Bring a warm layer: it is about 12°C below ground.
What to look for
- Galleries, a chapel and traces of soldiers’ daily life.
- Guided cave visit: about 1 hour 15 minutes.
- Free entry to the visitor centre.
Two ways to discover the site
The visitor centre is free, with an interactive timeline, archives and testimony to put the underground visit in context. The cave itself is 14 metres below ground and can only be entered with a guide. The standard tour lasts 1 hour 15 minutes, groups are capped at 49, and departure times are listed in the ticketing system; booking is strongly recommended.
With children and around the Chemin des Dames
A separate one-hour children’s tour is offered for ages 6–11 with an adult; its times and prices differ from the standard tour. Afterwards, you can explore other Chemin des Dames memorial sites, including the Vauclair Abbey ruins. Bring a warm layer in any season: the cave remains at 12°C.
