What to expect
About this event
I am inviting you to the Cité internationale de la langue française in Villers-Cotterêts on Saturday 14 November 2026 at 16:00 for an open rehearsal of Tum Teav, described as the Cambodian « Romeo and Juliet ».
Cambodian artists Borey Tep and Nyalic Khun, members of the ensemble of The Last Stage in Phnom Penh, share with you the result of their month-long residency at the Cité. Their visit echoes the 20th Francophonie Summit in Phnom Penh and is run in partnership with the Institut français du Cambodge.
Tum Teav tells the tragic love of Tum, a young Buddhist novice with a remarkable voice, and Teav, a young woman bound by the decisions of her mother, Yeay Phan. This romantic tragedy from the mid nineteenth century, taught in secondary schools for generations, deals with forbidden love, family pressure, class relations and abuse of power. The two artists reinterpret it in French and Khmer, drawing on the poetry and musicality of the language.
The rehearsal lasts one hour in the Salle Chêne, with free, seated placement. Entry is free with booking.
