What to expect
About this event
Let me take you to the Musée Alexandre Dumas in Villers-Cotterêts to meet a local artist history has somewhat overlooked: Marie Nicolas.
Born on 25 July 1845, she spent her early years in Villers-Cotterêts before moving to Paris with her parents, where she studied under the painter Charles Chaplin. She painted mainly portraits of women and children and showed her work regularly at the Salon. Her academic style earned her awards and commissions from the French state.
What I love is how the story continues. When she heard that a museum was being created in her home town, she wanted to be one of its first donors. As a result, the museum now holds fifty-four of her works, and a selection is on show in this exhibition.
Your ticket covers both the permanent collection and the temporary exhibition. The museum is open every day from 14:00 to 17:00 and on Sundays from 14:00 to 18:00, except Mondays, the last Sunday of the month and public holidays. The exhibition is open to all visitors aged 12 and over. The permanent galleries are accessible in a wheel-chair, while the temporary exhibition is reached by six steps.
