What to expect
About this event
Let me take you to the Musée d'Art et d'Archéologie in Laon, on rue Georges Ermant, for an exhibition with four paws and plenty of character: "Chat, chat, chats !".
Your guide is a local. The writer Champfleury, born in Laon, was a great admirer of cats and in 1868 devoted a well-known essay to them, "Les Chats", covering their history, habits and anecdotes. He introduces the exhibition and walks you through its rooms. The show looks at the many sides of the animal: its place beside humans since the earliest times, and its contrasting nature, from purring companion to fiercely independent hunter. It also shows how many artists have tried to capture its personality, and how the cat has fed our imagination, sometimes to the point of fear, through tales, literature and the many French expressions it has inspired.
Admission is free, as it now is for the museum's permanent collections and exhibitions. Opening hours are Tuesdays to Sundays, 10.30 am to 5.30 pm, and the tourist office lists the exhibition until 16 January 2027.
