I am inviting you to Soissons, to 7 rue Jean de Dormans, on Friday 27 November 2026 at 20:00, for La Misérable.
The show shines a light on the woman in Victor Hugo’s shadow: Juliette Drouet. It tells the story of fifty years of passionate love and mutual hold over each other. Juliette was the poet’s heroine, his muse, his passion, his copyist and his inspiration, but also his prisoner: according to the presentation, Victor kept her shut away in a maid’s room for fourteen years so as to have her all to himself. During that captivity she wrote him thousands of letters, while remaining his devoted support, body and soul.
Julie Depardieu plays Juliette, a hundred and forty years later, to tell the story nobody ever wanted to hear and to reveal the couple’s bedroom secrets. I like the reversal: for once, the woman in the shadows holds both the pen and the stage.
