What to expect

About this event

I am taking you to the Musée des Beaux-Arts Antoine-Lécuyer, at 28 rue Antoine Lécuyer in Saint-Quentin, for “L’éclat du silence” (The Brilliance of Silence). The museum is showing the remarkable Barbâtre donation: a body of pastel and charcoal works produced throughout the life of this pastel artist from the Mayenne.

The exhibition traces his artistic journey, his aesthetic and formal research and the way his technique evolved. Still life sits at its heart. Coloured pots, little cardboard boxes, sticks of charcoal, drawing portfolios and incense sticks: a carefully chosen ordinariness fills spaces that are often luminous, sometimes a long corridor, more rarely a ledge. I love the idea of a stick of charcoal becoming the star of the picture.

The donation is shown in rotation until 2028 to protect these fragile works on paper, so a later visit may reveal different pieces.

The exhibition runs until 31 December 2026, Tuesday to Friday from 14:00 to 18:00, with an extra slot from 10:30 to 12:30 on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The museum does not open on Mondays, nor on 1 and 11 November or 25 December. Admission is 5 €, or 2.50 € at the reduced rate, exhibition included. Information on 03 23 06 93 98.
